The resolution, supported by the United States and co-supported by 123 countries, was accepted by consensus without a vote on Thursday, meaning it has the support of all 193 UN members . The UN Assembly has highlighted the respect, promotion and protection of Human Rights in the design, development and deployment and the use of AI.

Resolution Future Outcomes:

“This resolution sets up a road map on AI where every country can both adopt the benefits and handle the challenges of AI,” US Vice President Kamala Harris said in a statement.

The resolution is the latest in a set of actions by governments around the world to address AI’s negative impacts and harms. AI can be used to disturb democratic processes, increase fraud or lead to dramatic job losses, among other harms.

The UN Assembly also called on all the state members to cease the use of artificial intelligence systems that are impossible to operate in compliance with international human rights laws

Worldwide Efforts to Regulate Use of AI:

In November, the US, United Kingdom and more than a dozen other countries presented the first detailed international agreement on how to keep artificial intelligence safe from unauthorized individuals, making it necessary for companies to create AI systems that are “secure by design.”

Europe has taken the lead over the US, with European Union lawmakers implementing a tentative agreement this month to oversee the technology, progressing towards adopting the world’s first artificial intelligence rules.
