Quetta Gladiator Victory After Late Islamabad Scare | The World Echo

The Quetta Gladiators edged past Islamabad United by three wickets in a thrilling encounter at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium on Thursday, registering their third win in the 2024 Pakistan Super League. Chasing a modest 139, the Gladiators faced a late wobble but held their nerve to secure victory.

Islamabad, put in to bat first, struggled for momentum throughout their innings. Opener Colin Ingram provided the only bright spark with a fluent 47, but wickets fell at regular intervals, restricting them to 138 all out. Left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz led the Gladiators' bowling attack with impressive figures of 3/20.

In reply, Quetta's chase started confidently with captain Rilee Rossouw (26) and Jason Roy (21) laying a solid foundation. However, a middle-order collapse, orchestrated by Nassem Shah fiery spell (3/22), left them needing 39 runs with four wickets remaining.

The tension mounted as Sherfane Rutherford (22) and Mohammad Amir (16) navigated the tricky situation. Just when Islamabad sensed a comeback, Rutherford smashed a crucial six to ease the pressure. Amir then sealed the deal with a boundary in the final over, sparking jubilation in the Gladiators' camp.

This win propelled Quetta to the top of the PSL table, highlighting their growing confidence and resilience. Rossouw, once again, led from the front, while the contributions of Rutherford and Amir in the tense chase showcased the team's depth.

For Islamabad, the defeat was a missed opportunity to climb the standings. Their inconsistency with the bat continues to be a concern, with only Ingram providing some solace. While their bowling attack displayed flashes of brilliance, they were unable to defend a below-par total.

The match served as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket. Quetta, despite facing a nervous finish, displayed the composure and skill needed to emerge victorious. Islamabad, on the other hand, will need to find a way to address their batting woes if they are to challenge for the playoffs.
